New Website

After a few months of bad connections/permissions and just not taking the time to figure it out, mjhartdesign 2.0 is up and running. It's not the next Facebook, but I've been able to clean it up a little and I also added some room for photos. And since I've been working for LS3P for 4.5 years now, I'll try and post some of the run stuff I've been doing there.

Not really blogging

I haven't had a real blog in almost 2 years on this site, but check out the shared feed to the right. I've beent trying to use that as a "what I'm up to".

Blogging about blogs and human behavior

Some people might agree with me that Metropolis magazine is one of the best design magazines out there. If you don't agree, please share something better. I'm always looking for new ideas.

But in the last online issue, Metropolis featured a few websites that have broken into my top favorites folder of websites. I'm not big for sitting and reading a lot, or searching all over the place for news, information, or stories. So when I can get a bunch in a "one-stop-shop", I love it. And I have to love it for this blog to see if I can change this new-to-me website. love-lines

And just because I haven't read the ideas behind these other sites, I'm just going to list them and check them out. But here's the big idea first...

Lovelines is an exploration of human desire.

Through large scale blog analysis, Lovelines illuminates the topography of the emotional landscape between love and hate, as experienced by countless normal humans keeping personal online journals.

and...

Process.

Every hour, 10x10 scans the RSS feeds of several leading international news sources, and performs an elaborate process of weighted linguistic analysis on the text contained in their top news stories. After this process, conclusions are automatically drawn about the hour's most important words. The top 100 words are chosen, along with 100 corresponding images, culled from the source news stories. At the end of each day, month, and year, 10x10 looks back through its archives to conclude the top 100 words for the given time period. In this way, a constantly evolving record of our world is formed, based on prominent world events, without any human input.

and...

Phylotaxis is an exploration of the space where science meets culture.

Its structure, derived from the Fibonacci Sequence and closely related to the Golden Ratio, is one of nature's most elegant. The Fibonacci Sequence is the set of numbers where each number is the sum of the previous two numbers. This simple sequence governs phenomena as diverse as the petal arrangement of roses, the breeding patterns of rabbits, and the shape of our galaxy. It is also evident in the design of the Great Pyramids, the composition of the Mona Lisa, and the construction of Stradivarius violins.

Cool? kind of interesting? do you love it?

so there I was...

... flying AirTran for the first time. They just started flying to Charleston and it's about time we got a discount airline here. I mention that because their in-flight magazine highlighted Charleston and my Friend Felice Killian. She owns a great jewelry design store on upper King called Felice Designs. You should check it out if you're into that. As I progressed further into the magazine, I found an article about three guys in Chicago who started a t-shirt company called Threadless T-Shirts. What a great business concept... designs, and judging for new t-shirts is done completely online by users/ consumers. Anyone can enter their own design and be judged/ critiqued. So I went through all of that to say this. AirTran might only have two flights a day to and from Charleston, but it gets props for it's most recent edition of the in-flight magazine.

license to IL

So my friend Sarah loves to find the coolest things out on the web and came across this little betty earlier today. I instantly thought of Joel. Sorry I don't have a link to the t-shirt site. I'm under a time crunch at work so I can't research it right now. I'm considering dedicating my whole blog to the funny cool shit that Sarah finds throughout the day. How do you feel about that?

Looking back.

So I just took a look back at some things I wanted to do for the new year. I've started doing some better design. I didn't really follow through with the 1% Solution thing for LS3P, but I've started doing some better design. That's the biggest thing for me right now. Just make something better for everyone. Even less bad is a small step. I know this is all kind of a ramble and nothing as clear as Censorial Nerd Jury. But that's because the guy is a making people parts. Cellular stuff. Sorry buddy, that's as technical as I can get unless we're talking buildings.

So here's a new thing I've been thinking about lately...
  1. Is it possible to keep up with everyone who has come through our life? Are we allowed to just drop back in on them every couple/few/ten years? Maybe that's where the reunions come in. I hope HEHS class of '97 is having one.
  2. ...
I hope to run back into some people someday. I've been extraordinarily lucky to know some many great people.

The Superbowl Shuffle is back!

So here are a few updated verses courtesy of Kyle Floetl. One talent dude on Facebook.
Starting QB, I'm your boy Rex
Passin the ball, it ain't complex
Cannon for an arm, wheels for feet
Leadin' the way, ain't no way we can be beat
Ron Turner lets me do what I like
You better be ready when I say "hike"
You bet your ass, we'll convert third downs
Superbowl Shuffle, second time around

My last name is Vasher, AKA ESPN3
Across the league, every offense is scared of me
I'll pick off Brett Favre and run it back
Besides Charles Tillman, I'm the illest cornerback
Doin' my part in Lovie's cover two
Stopping opponents, and entertainin' you
Every Sunday I'm ready to rumble
Goin' out to do the Superbowl Shuffle

Heart of the defence, my name is Brian Urlacher
Best playa' in the league at middle linebacker
My highlight reel would make grown men weep
When I take a nap I get sacks in my sleep
Fastest on the field, I weigh 258
The associated press thinks I'm kinda great
Bringin' offensive coordinatiors lots of trouble
I'm a big part of this Superbowl Shuffle

Adewale Ogungleye, a goofy ass name
Sackin' the Q, bringing the pain
Brought from Miami, traded for Marty Booker
Celebratin' victories with a bunch of hookers
Terrorisin' tackles, offendin' O-lines
Unlike Ricky Jr, commitin' no crimes
This dynasty is never gonna crumble
especially after this superbowl shuffle

Olin Kreutz, I'll break your jaw
Ask Fred Miller, I'm 100% raw
Pushin' defenses, making pro-bowls
Protectin' Rex, and openin' up holes
Thomas Jones will run for 2000 yards
With me paving the way, it won't be hard
I'm one of the unsung heros
A Superbowl Shuffle, 19-0
Benard Berrian, speedy and nice
I like to go deep, I'm called B twice
Fast as hell, hands like glue
The pill stickin' to my hand? It sure as hell do
Rex loves to throw the ball my way
Scoring TDs, making fans yell "yay!"
Like a pig sniffin' out truffles
Beatin' corners for a Superbowl Shuffle

After a 3 and out, they're forced to punt
Who do they call to get us out of this rut?
You're god damn right, your main man Hester
Bringin' some style, there ain't none better
Drafted out of the U, From Miami I hailed
Played with a bunch of thugs, who should be in jail
But thank the lord, I stayed out of trouble
Now I get to do the Superbowl Shuffle
1300 yards with Orton at Q
The Bears winning games, ain't nothin' new
Thomas Jones, give me the call
My style of runnin', balls to tha wall
I got the vision, I got the moves
Now I'm doin' some rappin, laying down grooves
Pushin myself hard, showing lots of hustle
On our way with the Superbowl Shuffle

I make a catch and they yell out MOOOOSE
I go all out after Lovie cuts me loose
I didn't do so well when I broke my hand
But its all healed so watch out, man
Our high powered offense puttin' up points
Hard nosed D, breakin' they joints
Every team is gonna get tampled
On our way to a Superbowl Shuffle

In my free time this year...

I'd like to design something outside of work.  Apparently, I thought about this chair competition last year.

I haven't been able to donate time like I've wanted so now I'm going to try and get LS3P into donating time as a firm to help out.  The 1% Solution and a few others are going to be my starting point.

I've also become tired of watching people talk about doing better design for the environment.  Let's start.  Check out plans for Chicago's future by UrbanLab.

Hopefully all this will be followed/ accompanied by some ARE exams and a certification/ accreditation or two [ CDT, LEED, etc. ]

Happy New Year.  I can't wait to get going.

What a weekend.

It's true. I've still got it. Early flights not close to were I'm living/ staying, wedding, concert, sloppy sunday bowling, and just general good times kept me going this weekend. I haven't partied and done so much for years. It's nice to know I can still do it.

Here's another little secret I've been trying to share with everyone I know. myHERITAGE just rocks and you need to try it out. Be sure to have an image of yourself. Prefereably a straight on shot.

Super busy at work. Wish I had something online to share with everyone.

I leave you with the infinite wisdom of Mr. Dane Cook.

Mad good photo gallery

So I can't say that I've ever come across a photo gallery online that was so extensive with some good high-res images. I don't doubt that another exists, but check it out. Be careful though, you can get lost in there.

Off and running.

Let's take the next step and see who's going to read this.Who wants to know something? Open ended I know, but I'm just asking for a little help here since I've been somewhat of a loner [ how I deal with things ] and I don't open up much. I hope this works for all of us.
